The theme for our photography competition this issue is Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

From the sleek lines of a sports car to the giant looming wings of an airliner, the world of transport offers a huge range of photographic possibilities.

Lighting - As always, golden hour (the time just after sunrise or just before sunset) tends to create the best conditions.

Try shooting with the sun behind your subject to backlight it and create a silhouette.

Perspective - Get low to the ground and shoot cars through puddles on the street, or a plane flying through the sky. This can look almost like a window to another world!

Shutter speed - Think about any moving elements in your shot. Use a fast shutter speed or flash to freeze motion, or a slow shutter to blur it.

This often creates an interesting effect if you are shooting a fast moving subject like a train or cars, while there are also still elements.

You could also try shooting from a train window to blur things outside. This works best when using a tripod to steady your camera.

Leading lines - Use natural geometry such as railway tracks, aeroplane contrails or road markings to lead the viewerʼs eye directly toward your subject.

Contrast - Look for the contrast of colours between a bright red car against the deep green of a summer woodland or more abstractly, a brand new car against the backdrop of a dilapidated building or wall.

Most importantly, stay safe while you're out exploring!

Whether you're at the end of a runway or the side of a road, keep a safe distance.

We canʼt wait to see the images you send in!

Send your entry to clydesidercomp@gmail. com by August 7 for a chance to win £25 and have your photo featured in Issue 37.

Usual competition rules apply – one entry per person and all entrants must live, work or be part of a group based in West Dunbartonshire. Good luck!
