Seafarers Award

At a ceremony in London, local campaigner Iain Lindsay from Old Kilpatrick was honoured at the Merchant Navy Welfare Board (MNWB) with a Service to Seafarers Award. 

It recognised his outstanding work and support to merchant seafarers and their families in his professional capacity as the Scottish and Northern Ireland Welfare Officer.  

He also successfully campaigned for a Merchant Navy Memorial commemorating the 55,000 personnel lost during WWII which is now proudly displayed on the Govan - Partick Bridge. 

Speaking about the day, Iain shared: “It was out of this world. I’m still beaming. Walking into that beautiful room with all the big windows, thinking to myself, ‘I’m just a wee guy from a housing scheme in Glasgow.” 

Of the six recipients on the day, Iain was the only one from Scotland which was presented by HRH Anne, Princess Royal, a patron of MNWB. 

After nine years with Nautilus, Iain made sure to dedicate part of the award to his colleagues. 

“Their support has been invaluable the whole way through this process. I felt like I was just doing my job, but they reminded me a lot of the people I had helped and seen. 

“If I can keep doing what I do, that’s what will keep me happy.”
